    美国生活随笔:旧金山的文化和科技之旅

    如果说Golden Gate BridgeMonterey 17-mileFisherman’s Wharf给人带来的是视觉的享受,那么StanfordBerkeleysilicon valley给人留下的则是心灵的震撼。多少年来,在San Francisco湾区这片只有几十英里长的狭长地带不知孕育了多少诺贝尔奖得主和IT界的大亨,当你置身其中,想象着街边每一个普通的House中,随时都有可能走出一位当今或未来闻名于世的科技精英,你肯定无法抑制自己内心的冲动!

    显然,以Golden Gate BridgeBay Bridge为代表的旧金山大桥群是引人入胜的,它们不仅连通了旧金山湾区的几大重镇,更在人们的脑中搭建了一条现实世界通往艺术世界的桥梁;ChinatownFisherman’s Wharf也让人难以忘怀,它们不仅体现了中华文明、欧美文化与自然风光的水乳交融,更为重要的是展示了几百年来海外移民改造自然、扎根美国的艰难历程; Monterey17-Mile更是让人流连忘返,大自然的鬼斧神工和当地居民的精心雕琢,使得这片只有十七英里长的海滩看上去更像一片人间的天堂,那碧蓝的海水、黝黑的岩石、活泼的松鼠、怪异的古树、怒放的鲜花、独特的建筑以及无数个不知名的小鸟,无一不使人铭记心中。

    尽管相对上述这些旅游杂志上常见的旧金山“明星景点”,似乎大学校园和硅谷给普通的旅游者可能不会带来太多的视觉冲击,但如果从历史、科技和经济的角度去审视它们,它们的存在就是一种奇迹。

    作为旧金山附近最著名的两个大学,StanfordBerkeley不仅是美国学生首选的大学,也是全世界青年向往的地方。从外观来看,Stanford给人的感觉文化底蕴更为厚重。成片的树林和草地,整齐划一的古典建筑,哥特式的钟楼,以及在教堂映射下的肃静感觉,这样的校园环境无愧于其110多年历史和27位诺贝尔奖得主!与Stanford相比,尽管Berkeley的历史更为悠久,校园面积也很大,但其建筑似乎缺乏规划,校园环境也显得比较拥挤,不过这些并不会影响其巨大的影响力,其拥有的7位诺贝尔奖得主,3位普利策奖得主,以及数以百计的国家科技奖的得主都在持续地影响着美国乃至世界。

    StanfordBerkeley具有同样影响力的还有这两个学校所催生的硅谷高科技开发区,从整机公司IBMAPPLEHPSUN,到芯片制造商IntelAMDNvidia,从网络公司CISCOLucentJuniper.COM新贵YahooebayGoogle,从软件巨头OracleBorland到神秘的Lockheed Martin公司,每一个公司的成长历程,都造就了数以百计的百万、千万乃至亿万富翁,而且这种传奇正在继续。尽管因为时间的限制,我们只参观了JuniperSUNIntelCISCOYahooebay Lockheed Martin等公司,但他们留给我的震撼已经足够强烈了。
